Art and culture - Plan de Corones and surroundings
There are numerous sights, towns, museums and natural spectacles that should not be missed around Riscone and throughout the Val Pusteria valley.
Brunico
Stroll through the medieval town of Brunico, the centre of Val Pusteria, which has many sights to offer and whose historic Stadtgasse (Via Centrale) is one of the most beautiful shopping streets in South Tyrol. The special atmosphere is best enjoyed on one of the many café terraces. Brunico Castle, a bishop’s palace which is situated on a wooded hilltop, is not to be missed and can be reached by a leisurely walking route.
LUMEN
Located on the former site of one of the Plan de Corones ski lift stations is the LUMEN Museum, which covers 1,800 m² and four floors, and is dedicated exclusively to the allure of the mountains and mountain photography. Using photos, videos, objects and mirror constructions, the history of mountain photography from its beginnings to the present day is illustrated in detail.
MMM Corones and
MMM Ripa
A visit to two of the six Messner Mountain Museums of South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, is highly recommended. The exhibition in the MMM Corones Museum, located at 2,275 metres on the Plan de Corones mountain and designed by star architect Zaha Hadid, tells the story of traditional mountaineering. The MMM Ripa at Brunico Castle, on the other hand, is dedicated to mountain communities from all over the world and their way of life.
South Tyrolean Folklore Museum
The South Tyrolean Folklore Museum in Teodone near Brunico is one of the most beautiful open-air museums in the entire alpine region. During a tour through the open-air area with original farmhouses and handicrafts, visitors get a lively insight into the everyday life of the rural population of the time. At the heart of the museum is the baroque residence Mair am Hof, which demonstrates the life of rural nobility and houses an extensive ethnological collection.
Castle of Tures
The castle was founded at the beginning of the 13th century and lies on a rocky ledge in Acereto in the municipality of Campo Tures. It is one of the largest castles in South Tyrol and is visited by thousands of art lovers and families each year. Since it has never been attacked and was carefully restored in the 20th century, the fully furnished castle is well preserved and provides an interesting insight into the castle's history.
The Dolomites
The Plan de Corones holiday region is bordered by the imposing peaks of the Dolomites to the south-east, which have been declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO due to their unique beauty. The magnificent Dolomites of Val Badia are especially worth seeing, as are the majestic Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the landmark of Val Pusteria which should definitely not be missed during a holiday in South Tyrol.
Val Pusteria lakes
You will find some of the South Tyrol’s most beautiful alpine lakes in Val Pusteria. The Lake Braies, known as the "Pearl of the Dolomites", impresses with its blue, partly emerald green water, which reflects the mountains of the surrounding Dolomites. The Lake Anterselva is the third largest mountain lake in South Tyrol and is situated at the end of the Anterselva valley, at the foot of the Vedrette di Ries summits. The Lake Dobbiaco, which is located between the Tre Cime and Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature parks, is another natural treasure.
The Riva waterfalls
The Riva waterfalls are located in the Tures and Aurina valleys, not far from Campo di Tures, at the entrance to the Vedrette di Ries-Aurina nature park. The three waterfalls are between 10 and 42 metres high and offer an impressive natural spectacle especially in spring and summer. They can be reached via Saint Francis‘s 'meditation path' from Cantuccio in Campo di Tures through the Riva Gorge.
